Hockey Hall of Fame Induction 2023

Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Weekend 2023 was held from November 10 to 13, 2023.  It consisted of the Hockey Hall of Fame Legends Classic on November 12 and the Induction Celebration on November 13, 2023 and a weekend full of events.

Honoured Members Oates and Nieuwendyk captained two star laden teams which faced off at Scotiabank Arena on November 12, 2023.   It featured a pre-game ceremony honouring the Induction Class of 2023.

The 2023 Induction Celebration:

The 2023 Induction Celebration was held on Monday, November 13th at the Hockey Hall of Fame.  It was a good year for the HHOF induction as seven individuals were inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame Honoured Membership:   five in the Player Category and two in the Builder Category.

In the Player Category – Five individuals were elected:

Tom Barrasso was selected fifth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1983 NHL Draft directly from high school. He won both the Calder Memorial Trophy and Vezina Trophy 1984.  He won the Stanly Cups in 1992 and 1991 with Pittsburgh.  Tom retired in 2003 with 369 wins.

Swedish Henrik Lundqvist was drafted in 2005 with the NY Rangers and spent his entire career there.  He won 459 games – the most in NHL history. He won gold medals at the Olympics (2006) and World Championships (2017).

“It’s been a great ride for me in this game,” said Lundqvist. “The Hall is filled with a list of players who were an inspiration to me.”

Caroline Ouellette won four Olympic gold medals and six gold medals at the World Championships. She was the 1st player in the CWHL to obtain 300 points.

Pierre Turgeon was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1987. Turgeon scored 515 goals and 812 assists. He added another 35 goals and 62 assists in 109 games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He also won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 1993 with the New York Islanders.

“It is a privilege to be amongst the greats of the game,” said Turgeon. “I am so happy to receive this great honour.”

Mike Vernon won the Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames in 1989 and the Detroit Red Wings in 1997.  Mike won 16 of 20 games during the 1997 Stanley Cup Playoffs winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

“My late mother asked me years ago if I would ever make it into the Hockey Hall of Fame,” said Vernon. “My mom was my first coach and this one’s for her.”

In the Builder Category – Two were elected:

Ken Hitchcock is the coach with the 4th most wins in NHL history with 849 wins over 22 seasons.  He led the Dallas Starts to a Stanley Cup championship in 1999.

“I really can’t thank the Hockey Hall of Fame enough for this honour,” said Hitchcock. “Hockey is my life and the friendships I have made in the game mean the world to me.”

Pierre Lacroix started his NHL career as GM of the Quebec Nordiques.  He continued to help the franchise win two Stanley Cups in 2001 and 1996 as G.M.. He passed away on Dec. 13, 2022 at the age of 72.

The Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Weekend 2023 was a great weekend chocked full of events for hockey fans.  Check back here for next year’s event.
