Canadian Music Week 2023 was held from June 5 to 10, 2023 in Toronto, Ontario and attracted participants from the music, interactive and broadcasting industries from around the globe. CMW is Canada’s largest annual event dedicated to the celebration and promotion of the country’s music, media and entertainment industries. It consisted of two information-intensive conferences, a trade exposition, , the music festival, and awards shows: the sync-awards, the Indies Awards, and the Canadian Live Music Industry Awards.
A Music Conference – Sessions of Interest:
1. 2nd Annual Social Justice Honours Award – Interviewer – Master T
Kardinal Offishall, Global A&R at Def Jam Records, is awarded the 2nd annual Social Justice First Annual Social Justice Honours Award Recipient for his work in helping those in need.
2. Web3, AI and New Opportunities
The Web3.0 panel discussed how musicians can take advantage of these new technologies to offer new services from entertainment to gaming to change how people consume creative talent for fun and profit.
3. Tom Poleman – Radio Innovator – Interview By: Jamar “JNiice” McNeil
Tom Poleman, Chief Programming Officer and President of National Programming, iHeartMedia is interviewed by Jamar “JNiice” McNeil. Tom Poleman co-producers iHeartMedia’s major events such as the iHeartRadio Music Awards, iHeartRadio Music Festival , the iHeart Country Festival, iHeart Radio ALTer Ego, iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina, and iHeartPodcast Awards.
4. Tom Jackson,
Live Music Producer who has worked with artists like Taylor Swift, worked with the 2023 Jim Beam National Talent Search winner to improve their stage presence and music.

Of great importance to musicians is potential revenue from Synchronization which can be an important source of income. As this panel pointed out, completion is tough and the process is long and complicated to obtain rights clearance and getting your music placed into a movie to television program.
What is Sync license?
A music synchronization license, or “sync” for short, is a music license granted by the holder of the copyright of a particular composition, allowing the licensee to synchronize (“sync”) music with some kind of visual media output (film, television shows, advertisements, video games, accompanying website music, movie trailers, etc.).[ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronization_rights]
The session, State of Sync covered the process of synchronization or licensing your music into a visual media output for fun and profit for the artist. The process is a complicated on from pitching to a music supervisor to clearing the copyright rights to the work and the artistic aspects of combing the music to the media output.
