Spring Showcase & OPENING NIGHT : Tuesday May 20, 2008
The Spring Showcase ( which is presented in May of each year ) is the National Ballet School's annual celebration of dance which offers the public a
special glimpse at the stars of tomorrow. The National Ballet School started the Spring Showcase with fine VIP cocktails & a light supper in the Town Square of
the School's beautiful new building, Celia Franca Centre at 400 Jarvis Street, Toronto with many VIP's such the School's board of directors. The
reception consisted of fine wine, excellent food and a live and silent jewelry auction. The reception was followed by George Balanchine's Serenade and John
Neumeier's modern classic Yondering as well as the pas de deux from La Fille Mal Gardée, Act 1 and the NBS premieres of Yang and Rocket Girl by critically
acclaimed modern dance choreographer and NBS Artist in Residence, Peggy Baker.
NBS: Canada's National Ballet School
Now in its 48th year, Canada's National Ballet School, is an important training institution for aspiring young dancers and teachers. Although about 1,000
young dancers audition each year, only about 50 are accepted into the NBS's full-time Professional Ballet/Academic Program or the Post-Secondary
(Intensive Dance). The School's progressive curriculum, with its emphasis on the physical and emotional well being of the student, has put NBS at the
forefront of dance training internationally. NBS graduates can be found as dancers, choreographers, artistic directors, teachers, and administrators in over
65 dance companies world-wide. NBS also operates a retail store, The Shoe Room®. The School's graduates include Canadian ballet stars such as Karen Kain,
Rex Harrington ( see Past Events - Unmasked ) , Veronica Tennant, James Kudelka and most of the dancers in the National Ballet of Canada and dance artists in
major companies around the world. Many of the students we meet opening night were headed for the Canadian National Ballet next year. NBS also operates a
retail store, The Shoe Room®.
The opening night was a beautiful night and for a very worthy cause. If you missed this event, be sure to put it onto your calender for next year! Also
note that NBS will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in October of 2010. For more information about the National Ballet School or to donate, click on this
