The Yee Hong Centre held its 20th annual "Discover China", Dragon Ball on January 24, 2009 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre with a blend of East and West and an exciting program leading to the countdown ushering in the Year of the Ox. The highlights of the evening included:
- A grand reception that offered many different types of appetizers including fresh oysters and clams, sushi, Washugyu beef, Peking duck, suckling pig and dim sum, as well as an open bar with wine, beer and drink and a Martini Bar;
- a silent auction;
- A live auction that showcased a Hermès “Tandem” Timepiece with 40 diamonds and a luxurious “Best of China Tour for Four” donated by Tour East Holidays;
- The entertainment featured a 20-piece orchestra (The Canadian Sinfonietta), a 40-member youth choir (Young Singers), a lion dance involving ten lions (Sunny Tang Performance Troupe) and renowned Canadian tenors (Destino);
- A grand raffle draw with a brand new 2009 Lexus I250 as the grand prize;
- The dinner menu consisted of a delectable Double-Boiled Bouillabaisse Soup, Red Tuna Sashimi Salad with Beet Dressing designed by Chef G.Q. Pan of Blowfish Restaurant & Sake Bar, the most tender Roasted Marinated Duck Breast with lotus leaf-wrapped rice, and a special dessert designed by Dufflet Pastries.
According to the producers, the Dragon Ball is the largest Chinese New Year Charity Gala in North America with more than 1,500 guests gathering to partake in what is one of the world¹s largest festivals the Lunar New Year. At the Grand Reception starting at 5.30 p.m., over 15,000 pieces of hors d¹oeuvres, donated and prepared by some of Toronto¹s finest restaurants, were served.
The Chinese Dance Workshop, fine food and the God of Fortune brought long-standing traditions to the evening's celebrations. The Live Auction allowed guests the opportunity to bid on a a 15-Day Best of China and Yangtze River Cruise donated by Tour East Holidays and an evening out at the Living Arts Centre with Mayor Hazel McCallion and other items.
Yee Hong Centre
According to organizers, the Dragon Ball raised more than one million dollars for seniors services at the Yee Hong Centre and since 1989 has raised nearly $16 million net to support the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, which last year served a record number of 15,000 people in the Greater Toronto Area with services ranging from community services to long term care at one of four Centres.
